Remember Who You Are
The value of focus and clarity is as true for a family as it is for a business.
A very successful and effective leader for a telecommunications company once told me that he got his belief in the importance of clarity from his father, who had one simple and focused message for his children, which he repeated over and over: “Remember who you are.”
He said that his father often talked about the values that were important in their family. The values were things like honesty, generosity, courage, and being ladies and gentlemen. These were the values that made them who they were as a family.
He said that as a teenager, when he would go out on Saturday night with his friends, his father would say to him, “Have a great time tonight, and remember who you are.” That’s all he had to say to remind his son to make good decisions.
What a simple, powerful lesson for all of us. When making challenging personal decisions, we can stay on course with our value if we just go by the guidance of “Remember who you are.”
