They Were Like Cats Watching a Feather
A few years ago one of the fads in corporate conventions was to have big screens on either side of the stage that showed real time tweets that audience members were posting about the presentation being made.
It was SO cool! And it was SO stupid!
What the on-screen tweets did was completely distract people from the content of the presentation onto the “cool” and totally distracting tweet screen. The audience became like a roomful of cats watching a twitching feather.
One of the great dangers in business today is the plethora of distractions out there disguised as opportunities.
“Different” is worthless unless it’s fundamentally better than what it’s trying to replace.
“Cool” is meaningless unless it advances the strategy.
“Wow” factors are a waste of time unless they create value.
Effective leaders know the difference between “cool” and effective…between a distraction and an opportunity.
